Thérèse: I see. That’s why I got thrown out of the convent! I thought I was doing everything right, but I wasn’t. To think I might have missed this! God created a whole world for us to marvel in and I let myself be locked up and refused to see it. Luckily He can fetch us back even from a convent!

[danjaley]

Roseanne: You must take the children of course, but I’m staying!

Jonathan: You can’t do anything. Your house is a ruin and your property’s been seized and you’re only a woman. You must save your own life for the sake of your children.

Roseanne: But I know he’s not dead. He’s the love of my life.

Jonathan: Will you stop repeating that bull!*

[danjaley]

Alice: You’re not going to take her away with you, are you?

Catherine: (cools Lilly’s face with her fingers)

Alice: Oh… I think she likes this.

[danjaley]

Alasdair: Am I really that superfluous?

Catherine: (shakes head)

Alasdair: AAAHHHRGHH!! Do you have to scare me so!?

[danjaley]

Béatrice: Oncle McCarrique?

Béatrice: Merci beaucoup. Zank you.

[danjaley]

Nicolas: We have to rethink our relationship, Jean. It’s wrong what we did. And I’ve been punished severely for it

Jonathan: I thought we agreed society was in the wrong there.

Nicolas: It’s easy to laugh in the face of law and religion if you have no idea what you’re up against. We’ve had our fun. And don’t get me wrong, I feel nothing but love for you. But we can’t do this any more. I barely survived this time and I don’t want anything like it to happen to me ever again. This is my second chance, and I must do my duty now, and perhaps you should do yours.

Jonathan: And what is my duty, in your opinion?

Nicolas: I don’t know. As far as I am concerned it may be just to stay away from me. The law is the law, and the only person I should look at in this way is my wife.

[danjaley]

Matthew: I killed a man, Father. There I was always trying to be good and kind and pay my taxes and it was all for nothing! Now I’m a murderer! But what else should I have done, he was about to kill Jonathan! Well, he was aiming at Montigny, but Jonathan would have been next.

Fergus: Most certainly.

Matthew: And anyway it would have killed Jonathan to see Montigny shot in front of him. Not that I thought so much – I fired when I realized he was going to shoot. I don’t want to have killed a man for Montigny, I don’t even like him!

Fergus: But you don’t dislike him so much that you wouldn’t protect him. And there’s also Roseanne and her children who will be glad to have their father back.

Matthew: You’re taking my side, because you’re my father. The Prison Warden may have had a wife and children too, who depended on him. Or even worse, he may have dreamed of having them, like I did. A lot of those Republicans couldn’t get anywhere under the King’s government. He did believe in the Republic. I’d be furious too, if I were in charge of a prison and the judge traded my prisoners for artworks. I had no right to shoot him. I should have aimed at his hand.

Fergus: That might not have worked. Jonathan is right, Matt. You saved their lives. At a price, but they were not be had for free. Lives aren’t cheap things, and buying them will leave winners and losers.

[danjaley]

Nicolas: I’m going to turn over a new leaf. From now on I’m going to make you happy.

Roseanne: You are making me happy.

Nicolas: Mais non! I’ve left you at home and travelled all over the continent …

Roseanne: That’s your profession. At least it was. I don’t think we’ll be able to leave this island any time soon.

Nicolas: Anyway. I’m going to put your happiness first from now on. Yours and the children’s, as it’s my duty.

Marianne: You mean to say that all this time – ALL THIS TIME – you knew that Nicolas was alive, and you just left us to grieve? Of course, I get it, it was a secret plan. But did you suppose we’d chat to the neighbours about it? What age do you think we all are – five? Did you care how Roseanne and the children felt, as long as you knew he was alive? It was disrespectful, it was cruel, it was …

Matthew: You’re righ’.

Roseanne: MAMAN! They did tell me. And I always said Nicolas was alive.

Roseanne: François! Lucie!

Béatrice: You won’t part with us ever again?

Roseanne: Béatrice! – You cut off your hair!?

Béatrice (solemnly): It’s a small sacrifice, in order to save our lives. Thérèse said so too. She also did the cutting.

Roseanne: Entirely right! Hair doesn’t matter as long as we’re together.

[danjaley]

Thérèse: But these passports only apply to you and Monsieur Brodie. Of course I will stay with the children if you ask me to, but …

Matthew: There ish a way. Bu’ you migh’ conshider it shinful.

Thérèse: We’ll do that. I know you’d never suggest anything truly disgraceful to me.

[danjaley]

François: What if you’ll drown? Or get caught by a warship? Or …

Roseanne: I hope this won’t happen. But if it does, you’ll be safe with the family that remains.

François: But I don’t want Thérèse and Oncle Matthieu as parents! Why can't I be the Montigny heir again?

Béatrice: I’ll miss you so terribly! Just like I miss Papa.

Roseanne: Hush, don’t cry. Trust me, it’s going to be all right.

[danjaley]

Prison Warden: Our judge may be corrupt, but the Republic is not!

[BANG]

[danjaley]

Jonathan: Are you all right?

Nicolas: Don’t touch me!

Jonathan: Of course.

Matthew: What have Ah done!?

Jonathan: Saved our lives.

Matthew: Bu’ we can’’ jusht leave him …

Jonathan: Pecqueur’s servants will find him in time. I hope he’s smart enough to hush the matter up.

Matthew: Today I saw a nun dancing on the beach with her hair flying in the wind, and it was the rightest thing I ever witnessed. Either the world has gone crazy or the rules don’t apply to our times any more. Which is not to say that it was right to shoot someone. We can’t just make our own rules.

Fergus: No, of course not. And the fact that you think so shows that you’re still an honourable person. But didn’t you tell your wife repeatedly that there’s not always a simple rule to apply to any situation?

[danjaley]

Alice: What do you think of her? The fever is down, but the inflammation of her face grew really nasty in the last few hours. She can scarcely open her eyes. And she ought to be resting instead of crying with discomfort.

Ysobel: Well, lots of babies get conjunctivitis in their first weeks. But on top of the measles and with her already weakened, it’s no joke. I think it’s time we consulted a doctor.
